Andrew Evans studied Medicine at the University of London and the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1980. His general surgical training took place in London, Sheffield, and Manchester. He spent a further 2 years training in paediatric surgery at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool and at Birmingham Children's Hospital. In 1986 he took up a research post at Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston. Work carried out at that time led to his M.D. thesis. He was appointed consultant surgeon at Blackburn Royal Infirmary in 1995. This hospital subsequently merged with Burnley General to become the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

He practices as a general surgeon and has three sub-specialty interests – colorectal surgery (surgery of the lower bowel), repair of the abdominal wall (herniae etc) and paediatric surgery.

Between 2000 and 2008 he was the Clinical Director for Surgery at the East Lancashire Hospitals Trust. He has been the lead clinician for colorectal surgery and is currently the lead clinician for paediatric surgery. He has been a Tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and is an Honorary Associate Professor at the American University of the Caribbean. He is a member of the Travelling Surgical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. In 2019 he was appointed Medical Examiner.
